About Hasamayaki
Hasamayaki or Hasami Ware is a form of porcelain produced in Hasami in Nagasaki prefecture. A traditional handicraft [designated as a Traditional Craft of Japan by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry], it was first produced in the latter part of the Sengoku period (1467-1603) and today is popular for affordable tableware for daily use.
The details of Hasamayaki are best described on the Kogei website which lists items designated as "Traditional Crafts of Japan" by the the Ministry of Economy. The below is taken from their description of the process which you can read more about through the link
Production Process
- Porcelain stone/Grinding Amakusa porcelain stone is the raw material for Hasami Ware : a clay porcelain stone mined from the Amakusa peninsula (south of Nagasaki).
- Forming : in the case of Hasamayaki mostly produced using molds before drying
- Unglazed firing to increase the strength of the material and improve water absorbency, making it easier to perform underglaze decoration and glazing [800 to 950℃]
- Underglaze decoration is carried out before the glazing. The characteristic indigo blue of Hasami Ware comes from the dye for gosu porcelain.
- Glazing to emphasize the beautiful luster of the porcelain and add features such as stain resistance, leak prevention, and increased strength
- Glost firing/ biscuit firing around 1300℃ (about 2372℉.) and only removed after the temperature has gradually cooled down to almost room temperature.
- Overglaze decoration Pigments with temperature restrictions, e.g red paint, are applied. After application the pieces are completed by firing at 750 to 850℃
- Inspection before shipping
