About Fukuoka's living crafts
Kurume Kasuri - ‘a traditional textile that has been handed down over the generations. Patterns are envisioned and the cotton is dyed before it is woven, the slight variations resulting from this process yield the trademark patterns of Kurume Kasuri. Daigo Ikeda is the 4th generation of the Ikeda Kasuri Kobo. Production Involves over 30 highly technical & proficient processes so no wonder, in 1957, Kurume Kasuri was designated as an important intangible cultural property of Japan
Incense : Takeshi Baba Yame is known for its production of cedar tree powder. At its peak, more than 40 watermills supplied powder to incense makers all over Japan. This watermill has been refining skills of gathering and grinding cedar leaves into powder for 100 years. When the supply of powder into Japan dried up due to cheaper overseas alternatives they responded to requests for the old style of incense which they now make in the ‘hope of delivering the richness of Yame’s nature, home of Japanese incense'. Incense here is made from a blend of Japanese cedar powder mixed with tabunoki powder as a binding agent. They are kneaded, cast & dried into incense one by one, all by hand. The watermill is run by renewable energy & underpinned by the wonderful energy of Takeshi Baba
