KAZUHO Chasen : 70 prong [For beginners] Inoue Sayumi : "Wakasa Inoue" workshop

£65.00

The Matcha Whisk or Chasen is used to whisk Matcha into its characteristic frothy form. It is skilfully handmade from one piece of natural bamboo and has bristles or ‘tines’.   The large number of bristles creates a bowl of matcha that is especially smooth and frothy.

Chasen making is a family secret, passed from parent - child with husband & wife working as a team.  The chasen workshop "Wakasa Inoue" is run by Atsuo Inoue & Sayumi Inoue and we are very honored to bring you Chasen from Sayumi Inoue who Michelle met in November 2025

HISTORY OF TAKAYAMA

Takayama is famous as the sole production center of Japan for tea whisks, accounting for almost all of the domestic production.   The production of tea whisks in this village dates back to the middle of the Muromachi period. It is said to have begun when Munemasa, the second son of the lord of Takayama Castle, was commissioned by his close friend Murata Juko to make them.  You can read all about this on the website of Takayama Bamboo Forest Garden which Michelle visited in November 2025
